Our History

Westwood Insurance Brokers, as it exists today, was incorporated in 2010, but there exists a long history before that.

The origin of Westwood stretches back to 1974 when a well known character in the Durban Insurance Industry, Graham Day, elected to break away from his years in the Insurance Company world to start his own Insurance Broking House, known as Graham Day Insurance Brokers.Over the following 25 years the company developed through natural growth. In 2003 after changes to the structure of the company, a new company was formed, known as GDI Schofield, which involved the incorporation of Graham’s previous business operation and a part of John Schofield Insurance Brokers book.

In the latter half of 2008 FNB Insurance Brokers acquired the Commercial & Domestic book of GDI Schofield, and incorporated the entire infrastructure into their Durban operation.

After a period of 18 months, it was found that the differences between a Corporate and an Independent Broker were too great and FNB accepted the offer from ex GDI management for the re-acquisition of the previously held book of GDI Schofield, resulting in the formation of Westwood Insurance Brokers.

Westwood has successfully weathered the transition and has, with its prior GDI staff, resettled in offices situated in La Lucia Durban. Since our reacquisition from FNB Insurance Brokers, Westwood has blossomed into a highly competitive medium sized Independent Broking House, enjoying the support of all main Insurers.Whilst Westwood has the benefit of 100 years in accumulated staff knowledge, there is a fresh awareness of the importance of our clients, both new and old, as well as a desire and pride to ensure that the service offered is always of exceptional standards, administered with honesty, integrity and fairness.

Westwood Insurance Brokers is an “Authorised Financial Service Provider” and trades under the FSP License Number 16726, specialising in all forms of Corporate, Commercial and Personal Short Terms Insurance.
